New Year's Day canoe float set for Chicago River

More than 300 paddlers are taking to the Chicago River for the New Year's Day Canoe Paddle.

The 27th annual event is scheduled for Sunday. The tradition is sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and the Illinois Paddling Association. The event starts near the Skokie Lagoons and finishes about four miles south in Linne Woods.

Earlier this month, the Cook County Forest Preserve District's board of commissioners passed a resolution celebrating the yearly canoe paddle. The resolution says "all who participate universally agree that there is no better way to ring in the New Year."

Participants must wear proper clothing and bring their own canoes and personal flotation devices.
