6 Illinois fire departments get federal grants

Six Illinois fire departments have been awarded federal grants to help buy equipment and vehicles and for additional training.

In all, more than $757,000 will go to the departments from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Fire departments receiving the grants are the Adams County Ambulance and EMS and fire departments in Charleston, Effingham, LeRoy, Northbrook and Rockford.

Sen. Dick Durbin announced the grants on Wednesday.

The funding was provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The competitive program aims to strengthen the nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and fire related hazards.

Last year, Illinois received 132 awards totaling over $14.8 million.
