Director of MacArthur Fellows Program steps down

The director of the Chicago-based MacArthur Fellows Program is stepping down.

MacArthur President Robert Gallucci says Daniel Socolow will end his tenure on July 1.

Socolow has run the “genius grants” program for 15 years.

Every year, the MacArthur Foundation gives $500,000 no-strings-attached fellowships to people who Gallucci says are “talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits.”

Winners largely don’t know they’re in contention for the annual awards and learn about them by an out-of-the-blue phone call.

MacArthur plans to select and announce a new director in 2012.
