Sidney Lumet’s great film was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and Director. Criterion is known for having the best video and audio quality along with excellent special features. The classic film lets us inside a jury room where we see what happens when one juror is not so quick to vote guilty on a seemingly open-and-shut case. The writing is first class, as is the ensemble cast led by Henry Fonda. The supporting cast included Martin Balsam, Ed Begley, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Klugman, E.G. Marshall, Jack Warden and others. Prejudices are exposed as we see what these men had to go through to make a decision. The special features include a new high-definition transfer, interviews, video essay, teleplay, trailer and a booklet featuring an essay by writer and law professor Thane Rosenbaum.
“Cave of Forgotten Dreams”
Werner Herzog’s amazing documentary played in more than 100 cities to great critical reviews. Herzog and his team of four went inside the nearly inaccessible Cave of Chauvet-Pontd’Arc in southern France. The cave had been sealed by a rock slide until its discovery in 1994. On the walls of the cave are sophisticated paintings of various animals, handprints, footprints and others that date back 32,000 years. Herzog, with the use of small 3-D cameras, lets us view the beauty and intricacy of the paintings. They are overwhelming to see, and you will feel excitement for the discovery. This documentary is a must-see.
