Late run powers Quincy over UIC, 65-61

Courtney Belger had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Quincy used a late 8-0 run to defeat Illinois-Chicago 65-61 on Saturday.

The Division II Hawks (2-0) got 11 points apiece from Ricardo Carbajal and Austin Weber.

Daniel Barnes led the Flames (1-2) with 17 points, and Gary Talton scored 13.

The Hawks forged their largest lead at 29-18 late in the first half and led 35-28 at intermission.

Illinois-Chicago fought back and led 49-45 after two free throws by Hayden Humes with 8:01 left. But the winning surge, including a free throw by Carbajal that put Quincy ahead to stay, propelled the Hawks to a 53-49 advantage with 4:27 left.

The Hawks sank eight consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal it.

Though outrebounded 35-29, Quincy outshot the Flames 47 percent to 40 and shot 86 percent from the line to Illinois-Chicago’s 62.
