McHenry County man held in $1M bond in mother's death

A 22-year-old McHenry County man is being held in lieu of $1 million bond after being charged with first-degree murder for stabbing his mother to death in their home in an unincorporated area near Johnsburg Thursday, police said.

McHenry County sheriff's deputies arrested Raymond E. Davis on the porch of the home he shared with his 58-year-old mother, Carol Schritz, according to authorities.

Police say they believe Davis killed his mother inside the home sometime before calling 911 at 12:59 p.m. to report the crime, said McHenry County Undersheriff Andrew Zinke.

He appeared in bond court Friday morning, officials said.

Deputies arrived at the residence shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, where they found Davis waiting for arriving officers on the porch, Zinke said. Davis informed deputies that his mother was inside and had been stabbed, according to the sheriff's department.

Police found Schritz inside, and she was pronounced dead shortly afterward, police said.

About a month before the murder, Schritz called sheriff's deputies to the home reporting that her son made threats against her, Zinke said.

“That call ended and he was transported and hospitalized for an evaluation,” Zinke said. Davis was not charged with a crime at that time.

About two years earlier, Davis was charged with misdemeanor battery and assault charges on Aug. 8, 2008, but was found unfit to stand trial, according to court documents. That case was thrown out by prosecutors.

Court records indicated on the same date Davis was charged in 2008, his mother filed for an emergency order of protection. Ten days later, she was granted an interim order and on Oct. 8, 2008, a judge granted her a plenary order of protection, which can last up to two years but be renewed, according to court records.

“We will leave his mental status up to the attorneys and doctors who will evaluate him,” Zinke said.

Police said they believe Davis was still living at the home as of Thursday, when the murder occurred.

The McHenry County sheriff's office investigations bureau, McHenry County state's attorney's office and the McHenry County coroner's office continue to investigate.

Davis is being held at the McHenry County jail on the murder charge, and additional charges are possible, according to authorities.

The murder is believed to be an isolated incident and the public is not in any immediate danger, according to the sheriff's office.
