Buehrle deserves thanks from Sox fans

As I watched Mark Buehrle’s news conference following what many say was his last game as a member of the White Sox, I could not help reflecting on his rare combination of talent, character and humility.

Many role models are often recognized as such as they prepare to leave us when, in fact, they have be right in our midst all along. Mark Buehrle has been quietly and steadily performing with excellence for over a decade. He represents a true role model in an era when celebrity is often created by spotlight-seeking narcissists and publicity gambits.

His body of work speaks for itself: 11 consecutive seasons during which he recorded at least 10 wins, 30 starts, 200 innings pitched, a no-hitter and a perfect game. While his athletic achievements alone warrant kudos, what sets him apart are his admirable personal qualities foremost of which are commitment, character, and humility.

Over 12 years with the White Sox, Buehrle always showed up in shape and prepared to go the distance.

He was a quiet leader whose work ethic kept him focused on improving himself rather than critiquing others. That his behavior both on and off the field never allowed us to be distracted from the enjoyment of the game speaks to his character. In a nutshell, he showed up prepared, did his job beyond expectations, acted in a professional manner and lived a life of character.

This is an admirable resume in any field of endeavor. In a city that has had its share of renowned athletes, few are exemplars in all aspects of their life.

How fortunate we were to have had the example of his life prominently displayed for us over the past 12 years. Drop him a note and thank him.
