Elburn may allow earlier liquor sales

Restocking their beer fridge could become more convenient for grocery shoppers, as Elburn is considering letting stores sell the stuff earlier in the day.

The village board Monday will vote on a proposal to allow packaged-goods sales to start at 8 a.m. Currently, the law locks liquor up until 10 a.m.

Jewel-Osco’s corporate office asked for the change, saying grocery shoppers like the convenience of being able to pick up everything in one stop, instead of having to return later in the day or go to a different store.

The proposal would not change the ending time: 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday (technically, early the next day).

It pointed out that neighboring towns generally allowed sales earlier in the day. St. Charles allows sales at 7 a.m. except on Sundays, when they are prohibited until 10 a.m. Sugar Grove allows them at 8 a.m. every day, and Batavia allows them at 9 a.m. every day.

The board votes on the matter at 7 p.m. at the village hall, 301 North St.

In July, the board voted to allow taverns to serve an hour earlier on Sundays, at 11 a.m.

Jewel-Osco opened its store at Main Street and Route 47 in 2007.
