Male pedestrian killed by train in Naperville

A 67-year-old male pedestrian has died after being struck by a Metra train in Naperville late Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The man was struck about 5:20 p.m. approximately 500 feet east of the Loomis Street pedestrian crossing, and just two blocks east of the Naperville train station, Naperville police said.

“Upon arriving, police units were advised that a male subject had crossed the tracks as a westbound commuter train was approaching. Unable to stop, the train struck and killed the individual,” according to a Naperville Police Department statement.

The man’s identity was not released Friday night pending positive identification and notification of family members. A statement from the DuPage County coroner said the man’s last known address was listed in the 400 block of North Avenue, which is within a block of where the man was struck on the tracks.

It’s the second such fatality near the Naperville train station in September. On Sept. 15, a person was struck and killed by a train during the evening commute.

The No. 1247 train, which struck the man Friday afternoon, was headed to Aurora on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line. It was delayed about an hour, said Meg Reile, a Metra spokeswoman.

Other trains moved through at restricted speeds.

“The Naperville Police Department worked with everyone and was able to route many trains around the scene,” Reile said.
