Walker says he didn't know about aide's immunity

MILWAUKEE — Gov. Scott Walker says he didn't know his chief spokesman had been granted immunity from prosecution in an ongoing secret investigation until after it was first reported last week.

Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie was granted immunity on April 14 in open court, the only part of the secret John Doe investigation done publicly.

Walker's comments to reporters after a job summit in Milwaukee on Tuesday were reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://tiny.cc/rj6r9 ).

Walker says Werwie would have been violating the law if he had informed him that he had been given immunity. John Doe investigations require witnesses and lawyers to keep its details quiet.

Walker also defended his integrity, saying he lives by the standards he got from his mother and father, a Baptist minister.
