Wisconsin suspends dog adoptions after discovering virus

MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Humane Society has temporarily suspended dog adoptions after discovering a puppy has a potentially deadly virus.

Dog adoptions at the Milwaukee and Ozaukee locations are affected.

Executive director Anne Reed says there are a few additional suspicious cases of canine distemper, so veterinarians will be doing extensive testing. Canine distemper is an often fatal viral illness that affects dogs of any age, but unvaccinated puppies are most susceptible.

The adoption of cats and small animals is not affected.
