Bedbugs trouble Urbana public housing complex

URBANA — Residents of an Urbana public housing complex say authorities aren’t doing enough to address an infestation of bedbugs.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reports (http://bit.ly/mUPTUg ) residents told housing officials they want a one-time extermination. They say treatment of the problem has been haphazard.

Housing Authority of Champaign County Director Ed Bland says 30 units at Steer Place have been treated for bedbugs. He says another eight will be cleaned during the next few days.

He says residents may be bringing infested furniture back into the building from the trash, and that maintenance workers will start breaking up the furniture to prevent that from happening.

Resident Dorothy Goines says some residents don’t want to throw away their furniture and that she has an heirloom loveseat that can’t be replaced.
