Claim by officer leads to perjury charge

A former Chicago police officer has been charged with perjury for falsely accusing a mourner in a funeral procession of assaulting her, authorities said.

Debra Green on the way to her sister’s funeral last year when she saw a car weaving through the procession to the cemetery. The driver was Sylshina London, an off-duty Chicago police officer late for work. When Green yelled at her, London called other officers for help.

Green was arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery after London said Green threw a bottle that hit her in the face

The Independent Police Review Authority investigated the incident after other mourners complained. The investigation found a video that showed London’s driver’s-side window was closed at the time she alleged Green threw a bottle at her.

Green’s conviction has been vacated. London, who resigned earlier this year, was freed on bond Wednesday. Her lawyer declined to comment.
