Plainfield's Melissa McCarthy of "Mike & Molly" was honored as best lead actress in a comedy series with an Emmy and a glitzy prom queen's crown. "Holy smokes. Wow, it's my first and best pageant ever," said a beaming McCarthy. "I'm from Plainfield, Ill., and I'm standing here and it's kind of amazing. AMC's "Mad Men" took home the Emmy for best TV drama series, while ABC's "Modern Family won the award for best comedy. "The Good Wife" star Julianna Margulies is the winner of the Emmy for best actress in a drama series. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">State trooper crashes after being cut off on I-94</h3>

An Illinois State trooper driving on the Tri-State tollway says he was cut off by a driver near Deerfield, causing him to loose control of his squad car before crashing into a retaining wall. The trooper was injured in the crash and transported to an area hospital. Police said the squad car hit the guard rail on the right side of the Tollway before careening across all lanes of traffic and into the wall. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">North Aurora Police officer to be honored for heroism</h3>

A veteran North Aurora Police officer will be presented with one of the department's highest honors today for his quick actions to save an elderly woman and her dog from her home during an electrical fire this summer. Patrol Officer Randal Voss, a 20-year veteran of the department, was on patrol when he saw smoke coming from the home with the woman and dog inside. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Obama to propose larger deficit reduction plan today</h3>

While arguments in Washington about President Barack Obama's proposed jobs bill heat up, the president is preparing to announce a plan to reduce the national deficit by at least $2 trillion more than the nearly $1 trillion plan agreed on earlier this year. Obama is expected to announce the measures today and is not expected to off the compromises reached with House Speaker John Boehner in July before their talks broke off. Full story.

Several accidents on the inbound Kennedy and outbound Dan Ryan from earlier have been picked up, but traffic.com is warning people that slick conditions exist this morning due to the rain. Slow down and use public transportation when available. Otherwise, it's bad out there. Congestion is climbing throughout the system, and people should be wary of a jacknifed semi in the ditch on IL-53 ramp onto westbound Lake-Cook Road. Also, peole should avoid Pfingsten Road, north of Lake-Cook Road in Deerfield, as of today. <h3 class="briefHead">Memories of 2010 as Jay Cutler is battered in loss</h3>

As Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was slammed to the Superdome's turf again and again yesterday, memories of last year's beat down in New York came to mind. The 30-13 loss also rekindled recollections of last season's pass-heavy start to the year that left Cutler out to dry. Cutler was even kicked in the throat early in the third quarter. 31-year-old Justin Rose played a solid four days of golf at Lemont's Cog Hill this weekend and after finishing his first three days atop the leader board, there was no chance he was giving up that position on Sunday during the BMW Championship. Roe finished 13-under for the tournament after shooting an even-par 71 on a rainy Sunday. The South African moved to No. 3 in the FedExCup Playoffs with the win. Full story.
