28 Joliet city workers take early retirement

JOLIET— More than two dozen city workers in Joliet are taking early retirement.

The Herald-News reports ( http://bit.ly/nnwDS1 ) that 28 union and management employees applied after the offer was made to public works, utility, clerical and 911 workers. City Manager Thomas Thanas says all of the applications will be accepted. Thanas says he was surprised so many workers took the offer. He says he expected 20 employees at most.

The program is expected to save Joliet about $2 million. The city’s payroll will drop to 892 full and part-time workers.

The city previously offered early retirement to police officers and other managers. Including the latest early retirements Joliet’s workforce will have reduced by 133 employees over the last two years.
