Pantry raid turns into a satisfying snack for two hungry boys

This summer it was fun to hang out with my friends. When I'd go to one of my friend's houses, his mom would pull a bag of mini hot dogs from the freezer and make us a snack.

One day when I had a friend at my house, I wanted mini hot dogs, but we didn't have any in the freezer. So we decided to make our own.

You only need three ingredients: hot dogs, refrigerated crescent roll dough and cheese.

We experimented making these with biscuit dough, and decided we liked the crescent dough better.

Also this summer I discovered I like chili cheese dogs so we served these cheesy mini dogs with canned chili. You could dip them into ketchup or mustard or just eat them plain.

A word from Mom: I like this recipe because I can control the quality of the ingredients. The hot dogs can be your standard all-beef dogs or franks made with pork or turkey. You could even use vegetarian hot dogs. (The only corn dogs I serve are the veggie variety and my kids have never noticed a difference.)

After we made these for the the second time I realized we could even fill the crescent dough with cooked maple sausage links, cheese and a small spoonful of scrambled eggs for a portable breakfast.
