'Book of Mormon' coming to Chicago

Chicago is getting its own company of the smash hit Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon.”

The irreverent nine-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (“South Park”) and Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”) is set to play Chicago's Bank of America Theatre for a 12-week run starting in December 2012.

“We plan to be involved every step of the way just as we were on the Broadway production,” said Parker and Stone in a statement. “We're incredibly excited about doing everything we can to deliver a great show for the Chicago audience.”

The Chicago production of “The Book of Mormon” will be separate from a national tour scheduled to open in Denver next August. That means “The Book of Mormon” could settle in for a longer Chicago run if ticket sales are on the scale of previous Windy City Broadway hits like “Wicked” and “Jersey Boys.”

Filled with profanity and lots of dark humor, “The Book of Mormon” follows two hopelessly idealistic Salt Lake City missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they try to find new converts in civil war-torn and AIDS-ravaged Uganda. “The Book of Mormon” received critical raves when it opened in March of this year, and is currently one of the hottest tickets in New York.

Tickets for groups of 15 or more are now on sale by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at (312) 977-1710. “The Book of Mormon” will be part of Broadway in Chicago's 2012 Season Subscription Series, which goes on sale on Sunday, Sept. 18. Individual tickets will go on sale at a later date. Visit BroadwayInChicago.com for more information.
