Sculpture heading back atop Indianapolis monument

INDIANAPOLIS — A crane is expected to lift a 38-foot-tall bronze sculpture back to its place atop the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis.

Crews are planning to begin work about dawn Tuesday on the last step in the journey for the 118-year-old Victory sculpture. It was taken down in April for a $1.5 million restoration project to fix decades of weather and water damage. It was brought back to Monument Circle on Friday.

Problems with the 10-ton sculpture were found in 2009 when the monument's observation deck was being repaired. Workers found that its joints had corroded or loosened over time and opened up, letting water inside and weakening the structure.
