Southern Ill. deputy accused of taking seized pot

MURPHYSBORO — A southern Illinois sheriff’s deputy is jailed on charges that accuse him of stealing marijuana seized as evidence and giving it to another person to sell.

Illinois State Police officials say 27-year-old Williamson County Deputy Caleb Craft is charged with theft, unlawful possession of marijuana and official misconduct while he was a member of a regional drug task force.

Craft was arrested Thursday and jailed in Murphysboro.

WSIL-TV reports that Craft has been a Williamson County deputy for three years and that the sheriff plans disciplinary action against him.

Craft couldn’t be reached for comment Friday. He doesn’t have a listed home telephone number, and it isn’t clear if he has an attorney.
