Central Indiana deputy hits man who jumped from vehicle

TAYLORSVILLE, Ind. — Police in central Indiana say a man died after he jumped from a vehicle and was hit by a sheriff’s squad car.

Police say 36-year-old Jeremy Daniels of Columbus was hit by the Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputy late Thursday on U.S. 31 near Taylorsville. Columbus police Maj. Matt Myers tells The Republic that the deputy began CPR until medics arrived, but he was later pronounced dead.

Daniels’ ex-wife told police they were in a vehicle together when he jumped out during an argument. Myers says the woman told officers she had slowed down but investigators didn’t know how fast the vehicle was going or how badly Daniels was hurt before the deputy struck him.

Myers says Daniels was wearing dark-colored clothing and was hit in a poorly lit area.
