Sentencing set in Chicago student’s beating death

The last suspect convicted in the videotaped beating death of a Chicago teenager is set to be sentenced.

Lapolean Colbert was convicted of first-degree murder, the same charge that four other suspects in the 2009 beating death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert were either convicted of or pleaded guilty to. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

All the others charged as adults were sentenced to at least a quarter century behind bars, with the one suspect tried as a juvenile ordered to remain locked up until he turns 21.

The videotape of the beating was shown around the world. It prompted Chicago official to beef up school security and persuaded President Barack Obama to dispatch top cabinet officials to his hometown to discuss ways to quell the violence.
