Mundelein boys awarded Eagle Scout rank

Submitted by Jason Brizzell

As any parent knows, watching a child navigate the path from an infant to an adult can strain the strongest of nerves. It is filled with many ups, many downs, many highs and many lows. The Schott and DeLozier families recently were able to experience one of the great highs.

Accompanied by friends, family and their fellow Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 195, Brandon Schott and Kevin DeLozier, both of Mundelein, were ceremoniously awarded the highest Boy Scout rank: Eagle Scout. Hosted in the Titus Brandsma Chapel at Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, both young men completed the final step of a journey that began in first grade as Tiger Cubs. Ten years of hard work later, each could say they have achieved a success that the vast majority of people in the world have not.

The world of Scouting has taught both of these young men many life lessons. They each have acquired camping, fishing, cooking and first aid knowledge to help them survive in the wild, while skills in finances, public speaking and communication will help them survive in society. The 12 parts of the Scout Law have helped guide them in making the right decisions in life, easing their parent’s worries as they navigate the world on their own.

These life skills were exemplified by their Eagle Scout projects, which each completed on the path to achieving Eagle rank. Both projects involves financial and material planning along with the coordination of 20 to 40 volunteers who assisted with the physical labor necessary. Brandon’s project created much needed shelving units within the blanket and towel storage room for Orphans of the Storms, an organization that rescues animals from unfortunate situations. Kevin’s project involved the creation of a sandy beach at the private lake of Equestrian Connection, an organization that uses horses for therapy for physically and mentally disabled children.

While their journey along the path to adulthood is not completed, they have had experiences and created memories that will serve them well. They are leaders among their peers and examples to follow.

If you happen to run across one of these two young men, congratulate them on this tremendous achievement. There is a guarantee that they will be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent during your interaction with them.
