14-year-old drowns in Wilmette

A 14-year-old boy Evanston boy was pronounced dead Saturday night after rescuers pulled his body from the water at a Wilmette beach, officials said.

The boy died at 7:26 p.m. in the emergency room at North Shore University Health System Evanston Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. The boy was swimming in Lake Michigan at Wilmette’s Gillson Park Beach, near Lake Avenue and Sheridan Road, Wilmette Fire Duty Chief Paul Bergquist said.

The Des Plaines Fire Department received a call for rescue assistance and sent two divers to the scene by 6:31 p.m., according to Des Plaines Fire Lt. Chris Wozny. The divers were on the scene for about an hour, Wozny said.

The Wauconda Fire Department was also called for back up assistance.
