Cary plans to interview 6 for administrator post

Cary is making progress in the search for a new village administrator, and officials plan to interview six candidates within the next week or two.

Village President Tom Kierna said the semifinalists will be interviewed by him and another village board member, based on board members’ availability.

“We’re all looking for somebody with a broad range of public administrator experience,” Kierna said. “Someone with some areas of expertise in economic development, some areas of administrative supervision, someone with innovative ideas and a fresh perspective.”

Former administrator Cameron Davis was dismissed with severance pay in April. The only explanation Kierna has given for Davis being let go is he believes the move was in the best interest of the village.

In the past couple of months, trustees have discussed the role of the future administrator, debating whether he or she should supervise department heads or just coordinate their work.

Kierna said he doesn’t expect the board to ultimately make any changes to the current ordinance, which states the administrator has a supervisory role. “We advertised (the position) as it was on the code, we’re interviewing and treating it that way,” he said.

The village attorney is currently reviewing the village code to ensure it’s in compliance with state statute, Kierna said. “From what I understand, by and large, we are in compliance, it’s just minor things” that would need revision, he said.

Trustee Bob Bragg, the main proponent of a thorough examination of the village code, said he also doesn’t expect the board to make any major changes to the village administrator’s role.

“I think it’s going to stay the same as far as supervising and overseeing, we’ll just update it so (the role) is going to be cooperative,” he said.

The six semifinalists will be narrowed down to two or three finalists that will be interviewed by the full board in executive session, officials said.
