I-PASS users vent on toll hike

Tollway drivers questioned at the Des Plaines Oasis on I-90 reacted strongly to news of a toll increase.

“I can see it go up a little bit because it hasn’t been increased for a while. But with the economy in the dumps, a lot of people can’t afford it, including me.”

Toby Mangold

Palatine

“It’s coming at a time when people are struggling to pay their bills. I think it’s unconscionable.”

David Thiess

Barrington Hills

“It’s outrageous. Prices are going up. Income tax is higher in Illinois. Also, taxes on homes are going up too. And now the tollway.”

Arno Galvez

Cicero

“I don’t agree. Right now with the economy, it’s too much.”

Victoria Hays

Chicago

“I agree with raising the toll to do the capital plan. The only problem in Illinois is once you do the capital plan, the tolls won’t go down and tolls will stay raised forever. This was supposed to be a freeway but it’s not. Along the tollway they build empires for everyone. This is a conglomerate now that can’t be stopped.”

Stan Krys

Schaumburg

“I think the idea’s a good one. (But) I think the timing’s bad for families that are struggling and people out of work for their commute to get more expensive. I don’t think it’s going to help people in the state right now. It certainly will affect me and my family.”
