Two teens charged in shooting of 1-year-old

Cook County prosecutors say two teenagers have been charged in the shooting of a one-year-old.

Gary Moore and Frederick Dean, both 16, were charged Wednesday as adults with two counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to Chicago police, the toddler and her teenage aunt were walking a dog along a South Side street when shots were fired. Although the teen dove to the ground in an effort to escape the gunfire, her niece was shot in the head. The aunt was uninjured.

The girl was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Authorities reported she was in guarded condition Wednesday.

Police say a 27-year-old man who was riding his bicycle when the shots were fired was the intended target.
