Explosives unit detonates 'suspicious' package in Winfield

A DuPage County explosives unit detonated a suspicious package after a resident found it near Winfield's pedestrian underpass, authorities said Tuesday.

Acting police Chief Stacy Reever said the unit detonated the package as a precaution while foot and vehicle traffic temporarily was delayed.

The call came about 7:45 a.m. Monday, and once Winfield police confirmed the package looked suspicious, officers called the DuPage County Hazardous Devices Unit and Union Pacific police to the scene. The Winfield Fire Protection District also responded to the area near Chicago Avenue and Church Street.

Trains were delayed about 20 to 30 minutes, Reever said Tuesday.

Reever said tests on the package revealed it was not a threat, but police are continuing to investigate.
