Cook County sheriff puts fugitives’ names online

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cook County Sheriff’s office has posted the names of 45,000 people wanted for crimes and unpaid child support on its web site.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced the new online database Friday. He says he hopes the search engine leads to a wave of anonymous tips about where to find suspects.

The database allows visitors to www.cookcountysheriff.com to search by name or by the last known location of anyone with a Cook County warrant for their arrest.

The sheriff’s office says the warrants are for crimes ranging from writing bad checks to murder.

Nearly 44,000 people with active warrants are listed, along with almost 1,000 parents wanted for failing to pay child support.

The sheriff’s office says the public search engines are updated weekly.
