Chicago man sentence in Valentine's Day stabbing

A Chicago man will serve a 27-year prison term for stabbing a woman and her daughter with a kitchen knife on Valentine's Day two years ago.

In a Tuesday statement, the Cook County state's attorney's office said Derrick Williams pleaded guilty this week to attempted first degree murder and home invasion.

Prosecutors say Williams and the woman dated briefly but the relationship ended a year before the attack.

She was at home with her daughter and son when Williams broke into their apartment and began stabbing the woman. When the daughter intervened, prosecutors say Williams slashed her across the face.

The children were eventually able to call police and Williams fled. When police stopped him a little later, they found the knife stuffed into his pocket.

Williams was sentenced Monday.
