Nationals beat Cubs in makeup decision, too

The Cubs would have preferred a day-night doubleheader Wednesday.

The Washington Nationals wanted the makeup of Monday night’s rainout to be played Thursday afternoon.

The players association broke the tie by siding with the Nationals.

When it became apparent Monday’s game would be washed out, the player reps from both teams met to talk about it and present each team’s feelings.

Both teams had a scheduled off-day Thursday. The Cubs were going to fly to Atlanta late Thursday afternoon while the Nats were going to stay all night Wednesday and fly to Philadelphia Thursday.

The Cubs didn’t want to lose their off-day, but apparently, the players association sides against doubleheaders whenever it can.

“If the team’s can’t agree, it goes to the union,” said Cubs player rep Koyie Hill. “In the union’s case, if there’s another option available other than scheduling a split doubleheader, they’re going to take the other option every time.

“They’re not going to voluntarily schedule a day-night doubleheader when there’s another option. We were up a creek on that one.

“They were staying over night into Thursday, so it worked out perfectly for them. Unfortunately, we didn’t get what we wanted.”
