'Nevermind,' 'Achtung' turn 20
Turning 20
Ready to feel old? Two of rock's biggest albums are turning 20 this year — Nirvana's game-changing “Nevermind” and U2's “Achtung Baby.” Both will get lavish reissues in the fall, complete with bonus tracks and other goodies. Here are some details:
• The “Nevermind” anniversary edition, out in late September, will be a four-CD/one-DVD set, complete with B-sides, alternate mixes, radio performances and studio rarities. A two-CD edition will also be available. Go to nirvana.com.
• U2 will release the anniversary edition of “Actung Baby” in October in no less than five configurations, including a basic one-disc version and a mammoth six-CD/four-DVD box set. Go to u2.com for details.
Get Vertical
Pop-rock group Vertical Horizon will be appearing in the suburbs this weekend. Vertical Horizon struck it big with its 1999 record “Everything You Want,” featuring the earnest, guitar-driven title track. The band's most recent record was 2009's “Burning the Days.” 8:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Viper Alley, 275 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire. $30. Go to viper-alley.com.
A look at Seattle
As long as we're walking down memory lane, it's worth noting that Durty Nellie's will host Legacy of Seattle, a show featuring three tribute bands that will pay homage to grunge heroes Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Stop by and relive the '90s! 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $6. Go to durtynellies.com.
