Law requires campus registries for sex offenders

SPRINGFIELD — A new state law will require convicted sex offenders to register with campus police if they enroll or work at a college or university.

State Sen. Ed Maloney is the Chicago Democrat who sponsored the legislation. In a report in The (Bloomington) Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/qGNHYW ), he says the measure is intended to keep campus police and others informed.

There are roughly 25,000 sex offenders in Illinois. They are already required to register with local police where they live.

Southern Illinois University Police Chief Todd Sigler says his school will decide over the next few months how it will make the registrations it gets available to the public. He says there are usually five or six registered sex offenders on the SIU campus.

The new law takes effect on Jan. 1.
