SPRINGFIELD — A day after longtime Sen. Susan Garrett announced she wouldn’t run for re-election, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison said she’d seek the 2012 Democratic nomination for Illinois Senate.

“It’s enormous shoes to try to step into,” she said.

Morrison, of Deerfield, is in her fourth term with the township. Her announcement Thursday came after Democratic Reps. Karen May of Highland Park and Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook both said Wednesday they wouldn’t run for the new 29th District.

In her announcement statement, Morrison said she’d make a bid for the seat and name-checked Garrett.

“I will work to serve the district with the same values and high ethical standards that Senator Susan Garrett has displayed,” Morrison said. “My job will be to do everything possible to help create employment opportunities in this district and an economic environment that encourages new business.”

It’s unclear so far if Morrison will draw a primary opponent and who will arise as Republican opposition.

Morrison said in a statement that she’d be interested in environmental issues.

“At the same time, I will work to protect our natural resources and to keep our lake water clean for all of the communities that rely upon it,” she said.
