Chicago City Council approves earlier curfew

CHICAGO — The Chicago City Council has approved an earlier curfew for children younger than 12.

Aldermen passed the revised ordinance Thursday.

Under the new measure, the curfew for children younger than 12 is 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The curfew times for all children had been 10 p.m. during the week and 11 p.m. on weekends. The curfew for children 12 to 16 years old will remain the same.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had advocated for the earlier times, saying they’ll help fight crime and prevent children from becoming crime victims.

The law prohibits children from being outside or in a public place without a parent or guardian after curfew.

Violators are subject to a fine of up to $500 or community service.
