Lightning sparks 2 Naperville, 3 Aurora fires

Lightning-packed overnight and morning storms sparked two house fires in Naperville that caused a combined $500,000 in damage and three minor fires in Aurora, officials said.

No one was injured during any of the fires, but residents of both Naperville homes were forced to find temporary housing until the buildings are repaired.

The first fire on the 5400 block of Switch Grass Lane started on the roof at about 12:42 a.m., according to the Naperville Fire Department.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control as the severe thunderstorm made the fight difficult, according to the department.

Officials said the fire was contained to the attic and eaves of the home, but caused an estimated $300,000 in damage.

Crews responded to a second 911 call at about 8:11 a.m. and found the roof of a home on the 2520 block of Freeland Court on fire.

Firefighters again battled the flames in severe weather conditions and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

The fire was contained to the roof and attic, but damage to the home and contents is estimated to be more than $200,000, according to fire officials.

In nearby Aurora, three homes were struck this morning.

Two neighboring homes on the 500 block of Hardin Avenue received minor damage after the lightning strike as did a third on the 4100 block of Stableford Lane, according to Aurora spokesman Dan Ferrelli.
