Crews rescue man who climbed downstate water tower

MILLSTADT, Ill. — Firefighters, officers and a state police negotiator have rescued a man who climbed the water tower in the southwestern Illinois community of Millstadt.

Officials say the man scaled the water tower Friday night, and several police officers climbed up after him to secure him.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that an Illinois State Police negotiator was called in and had talked to the man by cell phone before he was rescued.

The situation drew onlookers who lined nearby streets to watch events unfold.

The man’s name hasn’t been released. No other information about him was immediately available.

No injuries have been reported.
