Decatur couple jailed after stray-bullet death

DECATUR — Two Decatur residents are jailed after the death of a man who was shot in his apartment by what police say was a stray bullet.

Police told the (Decatur) Herald & Review that the 27-year-old man and his 22-year-old wife face preliminary charges of involuntary manslaughter and other counts. They haven't entered pleas.

The man told police they were drinking early Saturday when she asked him to show her how to fire his .45-caliber handgun. Police say they found a bullet-scarred tree in their back yard and spent shell casings on the ground.

The couple's home is near the apartment where Joseph Wells was shot. Wells was watching TV when a bullet came through a window and hit him in the head.
