Former Antioch mayor’s son dies in boating crash

An Antioch man was killed in a boating accident on Lake Michigan, off the shores of Milwaukee, officials said Thursday.

Demetrios Maravelas, 40, was found dead at 11:56 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. Coast Guard officials said. He was the son of former Antioch mayor Taso Maravelas.

A distress call was issued at 1:10 a.m. on Wednesday. During the search, officials found three sitting on top of the break wall near Milwaukee, Lt. Casey Steuer said.

They had all been passengers on the boat, along with Demetrios Maravelas who was missing. His body was found several hours later.

Steuer said officials are not sure what happened, but there is speculation the boat hit the break wall and all four people were ejected. Three were able to climb onto the break wall to call 911.

Maravelas was driving at the time of the crash, officials said.

The case is under investigation and the names of the other three passengers have not been released.

Maravelas was an Antioch Community High School graduate, who enjoyed boating, fishing and jet skiing. He worked as the kitchen manager for the family business, Maravelas Banquets and Catering, Fox Lake.

Visitation is set for Sunday, 4 to 8 p.m. at Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, 1055 Main St., Antioch. Trisagion Prayer Services are scheduled for 7 p.m.

The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 N. O’Plaine Road, Libertyville. Interment will take place immediately after in The Most Holy Mother of God Cemetery, Third Lake.
