Federal building in Chicago named for Lipinski

A federal building in downtown Chicago has been named after former U.S. Rep. Bill Lipinski.

The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board building on Wednesday was renamed the William O. Lipinski Federal Building. Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and current Democratic Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan attended the festivities. Lipinski’s family members also were there to see a plaque unveiled.

Lipinski was a leading member of the House Transportation Committee and frequent point man for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley on airport issues. His district included Midway International Airport.

The Chicago Democrat served 22 years in Congress representing a district on the city’s Southwest Side.

He was succeeded by his son, Daniel.
