Music events: Cathy Richardson rocks Fitzgerald's

Fitzgerald's, the venerable suburban music venue, will host the 31st annual American Music Festival this weekend. Blues, jazz, country, funk and good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll will be among the musical genres represented at the three-day festival. Scheduled acts include groups like DuPage County native Cathy Richardson and the Macrodots, rising country-rock star Joe Pug, bluegrass mainstays Special Consensus and one of the best live rock bands ever, The Waco Brothers. In all, more than 30 bands will play during the weekend. Add in some tasty barbecue, and you have a stellar musical option this weekend. Rock gods

U2 was a boisterous club band that burst out of Ireland in the wake of punk back in 1980. Now the group is rock 'n' roll royalty, with a worldwide fan base and millions upon millions of albums sold. Bono and the boys arrive in Chicago next week, a make-up date after Bono was injured last year. If you haven't seen U2 yet, get tickets fast. 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at Soldier Field, 1410 S. Summer Tonic
