No easy answers for idle Dunn

Adam Dunn didn’t hear any boos at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday night.

Then again, he didn’t play, so that helped.

Almost three full months into one of the worst seasons imaginable, Dunn was in the dugout during the White Sox’ 4-3 win over the Cubs.

He was also benched for two straight games against the Mariners two weeks ago, but nothing has seemed to work.

Not only did Dunn have the lowest batting average in the majors (.175) heading into Wednesday, the designated hitter led the American League with 91 strikeouts.

Dunn was at a loss to explain things before the game.

“I don’t know what else to do,” he said. “I’ve done all the early hitting, the video work ... I just have to play my way out of it, and that’s all I can do from this point on.”

There were plenty of reasons to sit Dunn in the series finale Wednesday, but his 1-for-48 showing with 21 strikeouts against left-handed pitchers played a big part in manager Ozzie Guillen’s decision.

The Cubs started lefty Doug Davis.

As for the boos, they’ve been getting louder and louder at the Cell.

“Believe it or not, after I’m walking back, I’m probably not thinking about the fans,” Dunn said. “I’m probably thinking, I really don’t know what I’m thinking. You hear it, but I don’t know how to explain it. Ever been booed? No?

“Then you wouldn’t know. I don’t know how to explain it to you. It’s like you hear it, but you almost think ... I’ve been saying all along it’s the Cubs fans booing here.”

Peavy flat:Jake Peavy downplayed his dugout spat with catcher A.J. Pierzynski, but the right-hander came right out and admitted he didn#146;t have much in Wednesday#146;s start against the Cubs.In his first appearance since coming off the disabled list with a strained right groin, Peavy allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 5.1 innings.#147;Just one of those nights,#148; Peavy said. #147;I obviously wasn#146;t as sharp as I can be. But after a win like we had tonight, a 1-run win with the pen stepping up, Chris Sale really stepping up and doing a good job, it was a big series win against a team that#146;s playing well.#148;Speed demon:A.J. Pierzynski had a key hit Wednesday, and a rare one.In the fourth inning, Pierzynski hit his first triple since May 5, 2009, and it scored 2 runs.#147;I haven#146;t had a triple in a long time,#148; Pierzynski said. #147;I hit it in a good spot and what happened was I saw (Alex) Rios coming around and I wanted to make sure he scored so I got the throw. It was bang-bag and I got in there.#148;Shut it down:Chris Sale, Jesse Crain, Matt Thornton and Sergio Santos combined to pitch 3#8532; scoreless innings Wednesday, and the White Sox#146; bullpen has allowed only 1 earned run in their last 20#8531; innings.
