Pedestrian killed by train in Naperville

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train at the Naperville train station Wednesday night, causing major delays on Metra lines, according to authorities.

Police said the pedestrian, who is believed to be male, was struck at the station, 105 Fourth Avenue, at around 7:10 p.m.

Naperville Police Cmdr. Ray Adkins said the DuPage County coroner was at the scene, and an early investigation indicated the death was a suicide.

The person was struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight, which remained stopped at the Naperville station until approximately 9:20 p.m., officials said.

Multiple outbound Metra trains on the BNSF line were delayed for more than an hour as the investigation took place.

Metra train No. 1296 scheduled to arrived in Chicago at 9:40 p.m. and No. 1291 scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 8:56 p.m., were running about 35 to 45 minutes behind schedule, according to Metra.

This is the second time in two days that a person has been struck by a train in Naperville.

Tuesday afternoon a woman was hospitalized after slipping while walking along the tracks and being sideswiped by a Metra train near the Route 59 station.

The woman was sent by ambulance to Edward Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, officials said.
