Music events: Get Up Kids hit Durty Nellie's

Grunge pioneers

Formed in the early 1980s in the Pacific Northwest, The Melvins perfected a dark, heavy brand of guitar rock that influenced the key players of the Seattle “grunge” explosion of the 1990s — bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Though never as popular as the bands they influenced, The Melvins continue to enjoy a devoted following. 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, and Wednesday, June 1, at the Double Door, 1572 N. Milwaukee, Chicago. $25-$40. Go to doubledoor.com.

Contemporary Celtic

Gaelic Storm, a band that specializes in giving traditional Irish music a contemporary spin, enjoyed the mother of all breaks when it appeared in the film “Titanic” as the Celtic party band in steerage. Since then, the group has amassed a devoted following all over the country. The band plays in the suburbs next week. 8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Clearwater Theater, 96 W. Main St., West Dundee. $20. Go to clearwatertheater.com.

Get up and go

The Get Up Kids rose to prominence during the wave of pop-oriented alternative rock that hit in the mid-1990s. The Kansas City-based band scored a hit with the 1999 release “Something to Write Home About,” but then went on hiatus a few years later. The Kids are back this year with a new record, “There Are Rules,” that includes straight-ahead guitar-driven rock and quirky, angular pop that recalls the '80s. The Get Up Kids perform with Save the Day at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $23. Go to durtynellies.com.
