Report: Gas sales at Ambassador Bridge reap profit

DETROIT — A published report says tax-free fuel sales at the Ambassador Bridge are a large source of profit for the owners of the span connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

The Detroit Free Press reports Monday that gasoline and diesel sold at the company's duty-free store to Canada-bound travelers is cheaper than nearby stations. The newspaper reports about 60 cents a gallon of what would be taxes goes to the bridge company.

Moroun's son, Matthew, says the sales produce healthy profits but "nowhere near" that level.

Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel "Matty" Moroun won the right to sell duty-free fuel in 2007 following a court battle. He opposes a plan supported by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and others to build a second span. Moroun wants to build his own new bridge.
