Mayor Daley to hold open house as he leaves office

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is planning one last open house at City Hall to thank residents as he leaves office after 22 years.

The open house is set for the afternoon of May 9, one week before Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is sworn in.

Daley turns 69 on Sunday.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that he's held an open house after each of his six inaugurations.

The mayor has been on a farewell tour of the city in recent weeks in an effort to visit all 50 wards. His aides are calling his visits the "Neighborhood Appreciation Tour."

Daley stunned observers in September when he announced he wouldn't be running for a record seventh term.

He became Chicago mayor in 1989.
