Geneva Earth Day starts at 11 a.m. at RiverPark

Information on what you can do to maintain the health of the Earth will be a large part of the Earth Day celebration Saturday in Geneva.

The free event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at RiverPark on North River Lane.

Geneva merchants who sell environmentally friendly products and those that improve the environment will be there. You can buy rain barrels, see a demonstration of worm composting and speak with a gardening expert.

Visitors can bring items to be recycled, including electronics, gift cards, natural wine corks, polystyrene foam (no packing peanuts) and prescription drugs. There will be a paper-shredding truck available. Guided tours of the park, explaining its geology and the native plants, will be given. The Geneva library and park districts will organize games for children.

Ball Horticultural Co. will also give away heirloom tomato plants, compact fluorescent bulbs will be distributed, and children will receive seeds to plant.

Produce will be available from the Winter Geneva Green Market, and Inglenook Pantry will sell lunch. Visitors are asked to bring their own water bottles, coffee mugs and cutlery, to cut down on waste.

The event is sponsored by the city’s natural resources committee.
