Rush thump Soul

With former Rush head coach Mike Hohensee patroling the sidelines for the Philadelphia Soul, the Rush defense held a reunion party of its own Friday night.

The Rush came up with 9 takeaways (4 interceptions and 5 fumbles) to pull away for a 62-28 win in its home opener at Allstate Arena.

Next up for the Rush (2-0) is unbeaten San Jose, which is averaging 68 points per game and squeeked by Kansas City for a 60-57 victory Friday.

While the Soul scored first just 46 seconds into the game, the Rush offense bounced back quickly and scored five unanswered touchdowns to take control of the game.

Two of the TDs came after a fumble recovery by FB/LB arcus Waugh and a net recovery by DB Perry Kyles. By the time the first half ended, the Rush had a comfortable 40-14 lead for the crowd of 10,582 to enjoy.

“I’m really proud of our guys and the way they played tonight,” Rush head coach Bob McMillen said. “We had a quick turnaround having played Monday night in Milwaukee and then tonight at home and the guys rose to the occasion. We’ve said all along that we have to get better each game and I think we showed that.”

The defeat gave the Soul their largest loss since 2006.

Rush QB Russ Michna finished the game with 21 completions in 29 attempts for 189 yards and 1 interception. He passed for 3 touchdowns and rushed for another.

The Rush hosts the San Jose Sabercats at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Allstate Arena. For tickets and more information, visit arenarush.com.
