'The Fighter' DVD a knockout

“The Fighter”

This terrific film received seven Academy Award nominations and won two for Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo).

The story takes place in Lowell, Mass., where Dicky Ekland (Bale) is a local boxing celebrity. He's had a series of small bouts and once fought Sugar Ray Leonard. He loves his half-brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), who he helps train, but he can't get escape drugs. Micky is managed by his smothering mother, Alice (Leo), and they have a unique relationship. Micky battles opponents in the ring and his family out of it once he starts dating Charlene (Amy Adams).

Family is at the heart of the story, and Christian Bale's performance is riveting.
