Free throw shooters take the line in Libertyville

The challenge and qualifying rounds are complete, and finalists in several categories will be shooting free throws for all the marbles Sunday at the Libertyville Sports Complex.

Beside the pride of victory, winners will get medals, and gift certificates along with other prizes will be awarded as part of the first Free Throw Challenge at the village-owned complex.

“I was delighted by the participation. We had close to 100 individual people who gave it a go,” said Connie Kowal, director of recreation and the sports complex.

The free throw challenge, like the softball home run derby last fall, was introduced by Kowal as a way to increase awareness of the complex and create an event that can grow and evolve each year.

Contestants paid $5 for their first 10 shots, and could buy 10 more for another $5.

Altogether, 52 youths, adults and seniors will compete beginning at 1:30 p.m. Most of the shooters are from Libertyville, but nearly two dozen other communities will be represented. Contestants include a father/son and father/daughter combo.

Kowal said a “center court” atmosphere will be created Sunday, as the finals will take place during college basketball’s March Madness.

“We’ll take one of our courts and make it an event,” Kowal said. “Fans, friends and family can come out and see the competition.”

Though they won’t be at courtside, televisions in other areas of the building will be tuned to the college games.

“It’s all part of the basketball atmosphere we’re creating,” Kowal said.

The public is welcome. The Sports Complex is at Peterson Road and Route 45.
