Weather service: Tornadoes were part of Ill. storm
GRANITE CITY, Ill. — The National Weather Service confirms that two tornadoes touched down in southwestern Illinois as part of severe storms earlier this week.
The agency says wind from a funnel cloud spotted late Sunday in Granite City reached 90 mph. Winds in Troy reached 120 mph.
No fatalities were reported, although at least six people were treated at a hospital for injuries.
The storm tore part of the roof off a church in Maryville. In nearby Troy, the storm bent a football field's scoreboard and tossed bleachers onto the field. The strong wind also toppled power lines, snapped tree limbs and damaged many roofs.
The weather service blamed straight-line wind for most of the storm damage in the St. Louis region.
